Description: From Library Journal
Librarians looking to help patrons find fiction will get a boost from this new work, which was born out of an effort to update the fifth edition of Virginia Brokaw Gerhardstein's American Historical Fiction but has been expanded far beyond the scope of a sixth edition. The book was compiled by Adamson, chair of the English department of Prince George's Community College and the author of several books on education and literature. Defining historical fiction as a work taking place in a time earlier than that with which the reader is familiar (regardless of publication date), Adamson has identified more than 3000 titles set in the United States that are suitable for adult and young adult readers. Selections, which had to be either reviewed or summarized in a publisher's catalog, were based on various subject headings in the Library of Congress catalog (e.g., "Historical Fiction," "Love Stories"), reviews in library review sources (e.g., Library Journal, Publisher's Weekly), and works already present in Gerhardstein. Organized by time period, the entries include author, title, date of publication, number of pages, content notes, setting, main characters, and, where applicable, genres, awards, and series/sequel information. Books for young adult readers, culled from School Library Journal and Booklist, are marked with a diamond. In addition, the work is augmented by two appendixes: award winners listed by award and books for young adults. There are also five indexes?by author, title, genre (29 of them), subject, and geographical setting. As a whole, this work should be a boon to reader's advisory and collection development librarians needing to build specific areas of the collection. Recommended for public libraries and academic libraries supporting relevant programming.?Neal Wyatt, Chesterfield Cty. P.L., VA
