Description:
From Booklist
This, claims Slide, is the first "critical and historical guide to the genre" of the Hollywood novel. The more than 1,200 novels described here are set within the Hollywood film industry, include real or fictional film-related characters,
or are in film-related settings anywhere in the world. All types of fiction are covered, including children's books, mysteries, science fiction, and romance. Only English-language publications are treated, but these include works translated into
English.
Arrangement of main entries is alphabetical by author and includes birth and, where applicable, death dates. Publisher and publication year are indicated for each novel. Annotations range in length from a sentence or two for many authors
(e.g., Clyde B. Clason, Wayne Karlin, Noel B. Gerson) to several pages for a few (e.g., Nathanael West, Budd Schulberg, P. G. Wodehouse). Some of the shortest entries are entirely descriptive, giving only the briefest plot summary; others indicate little
more than that the novels named are "identified by Carolyn See as a Hollywood novel." More often, there is a mix of description and evaluation, sometimes including brief but lively quotations from reviews.
Other features include a chronology of
the Hollywood novel (from 1912 until well into 1994), "tentative bibliographies" of the television and radio novel, a very brief general bibliography, and title and subject indexes.
Slide is a prolific author of books on film and other popular
entertainment. The Hollywood Novel is an authoritative and frequently entertaining guide recommended for large libraries serving patrons with an interest in this rather specialized topic.
