Ross focuses on helping youth librarians find freeware and shareware programs on the Internet. Part 1 offers an explanation of the advantages (price) and disadvantages (viruses) of downloaded software as well as suggestions for getting connected and bargain hunting. Part 2 includes listings of recommended software for Macintosh and IBM-PC computers and a directory of educational sites located on the World Wide Web, gopher, and FTP. Unfortunately, successful software retrieval seems to depend on maintaining accounts on multiple commercial services (a costly proposition for many schools and libraries), and some listings are already dated (the CIA Factbook noted is for 1993).
