Ziarnik begins with a history of librarianship, explaining that school and public libraries began as a team, but went their separate ways over the years. She gives specific examples of working together to achieve a common goal: helping students. Other discussions include making sure that students and teachers understand the research process and the value of class visits to the public library and visits by the public librarian to the schools. Suggestions include arranging a get-acquainted party, working together on grants, and collaborating on author or illustrator visits and other programs that draw both institutions together. The author also gives a personal peek at a day in her life as a school services librarian at a public library. She includes some sample materials requests as well as some tips for teachers (e.g., "Avoid mass assignments on the same subject"). Most of the suggestions put forth here are common sense for experienced librarians but may give those new to the field some ideas for meeting their counterparts and fostering good professional relations.
