Auto FTP clients for Windows: AutoFTP Pro, AutoFTP Premium, AutoFTP Service

This glossary defines some terms used in PrimaSoft ftp products: Auto FTP Professional, Auto FTP Premium, and Auto FTP Service.

Auto Transfer

Auto FTP will automatically dial, connect to the remote site(s), upload and download files and disconnect.

Auto-Recurring File Transfer

Auto Recurring File Transfers are transfers that repeat according to defined frequency parameters (time and date). The program without human help completes Auto Recurring File Transfers.

Compression

Compression is a way of representing the same file in the form that occupies less space. AutoFTP Premium and Service enable you to use the most popular ZIP archive file format within the programs. You can automate compression or decompression of files scheduled for download or upload. By password-protecting a zip file you add security to your file transfers.

Dial-up Connection

Dial-up Connection - Windows 9x, 2000, NT has a built-in set of functions that allow other software to connect to the Internet and other networks; those functions are called Dial-up Networking.

Downloading

Downloading - a process of sending files from a remote system to the local computer.

Encryption

Encryption is the process of encoding information so that people will be unable to read it. A password is required to decrypt (decode) the information. AutoFTP Premium and Service use the industry standard Zip 2.0 encryption format and the latest industry standard strong encryption algorithms: AES (US Advanced Encryption Standard known as Rijndael), Twofish, RSA.

File Folder

File Folder - used by Windows 9x, 2000 instead of a more common term - directory. AutoFTP uses the term folder for both local and remote directories.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

FTP - File Transfer Protocol, the most common protocol used to transfer files between computers; practically the only transfer protocol used on the Internet.

Passive Mode

Passive mode is the data connection established by the client computer. Usually, when you connect to the network computer, the server set ups the connection. Passive mode gives additional security to your file transfers and allows users who are behind some firewalls to access their ftp servers.

Scheduler

Transfer Scheduler Window will enable you to schedule auto transfers of previously saved transfer sets.

Service Application

Auto FTP Service is a file transfer application that allows you to run scheduled transfers as a service process.

Service Process

Service is a process that is loaded by the Service Control Manager. Service applications are often loaded at bootup, before any user logs in, and are independent of any specific user being logged on at any time. Windows 2000, NT, XP

Stealth Mode

The Stealth Mode can run Auto Transfers without an overhead of the user interface (it takes less resources and is more reliable). It is recommended to run all Auto Transfers (especially over a long period of time) in Stealth Mode.
- To avoid launching Auto Transfers when in the full version of AutoFtp check the option "Pause Auto Transfers".
- Stealth Mode should not be confused with Hidden Mode (File/Hide) which simply hides all Auto FTP windows.

Transfer Item

Transfer Item is a file selected for transfer (download, upload). The transfer item has the following paramters: Transfer Direction (Upload, Download), Local File Name, Local File Folder, Remote Site, Remote File Name, Remote File Folder. A group of transfer items you can save as transfer set. Transfer sets allow you to automate your transfer precedures.

Transfer Manager

Transfer Manager is the place where you can define, modify, delete, and start all transfer activities.

Transfer Set

Transfer Set is a group of transfer items saved for future reuse. Transfer Set enables you to quickly repeat your transfers. Instead of setting up your transfers manually each time it is much faster if you define the transfer once and save it as a Transfer Set. Transfer Set saves all parameters required to complete the transfer (file names, directories, server address, password, ..). Next time when you want to transfer the same group of files you just start the program, open the transfer manager window, load the previously defined transfer set, and click on the Start push button. Auto FTP will complete all transfers. To create scheduled transfers you have to define the Transfer Set first.

Uploading

Uploading - a process of sending files from the local computer to a remote system.

ZIP File, ZIP, UNZIP

ZIP file - the most popular file compression method. It is used by most companies to prepare archives (files that contain other files in a compressed form). PkWare Inc. holds a patent for ZIP file format. Auto FTP Premium and Service support zip and unzip functionality.
