Description: About the Author
Roy Hughes was born in North Wales, where as a schoolboy he was obsessed with searching the mountains for Neolothic stone axes. After serving in the Army during World War II he studied at BangoR University the joined the Department of Ancient Monuments of the Ministry of WorKs. In 1950 he became Deputy Curator of Derby Museum, where he inherited the notes on Derbyshire clocks and clockmakers gathered by Frank Williamson. For the next thirty-two years, until he retired to live near Derby, he added further information, which was the continued by his successor Max Craven.

Maxwell Craven was born in London in 1945 educted in the West Country and first came to Derby in 1966. He later joined the Derby Meseum, being keeper of the Antiquities from 1982 to 1998. For over twenty years he has lectured on Derby and Derbyshire topics and has produced mor the fifteen books including "John Whitehurst of Derby(1996). He has been active in research and conservation in Derby, which he considers to be a much under-rated city, and is a fromer Chairman of Derby Civic Society, whose Newsletter he editied for many years. In January 1996 he recieved an honorary degree from the University of Derby.
