Translated from the 1997 French original, Great Masters adds nothing to the understanding of European painting. Not the "comprehensive survey" it claims to be, instead this offers one artist on one page with one picture (or occasionally two or three) and a potted biography and discussion. There are a few unusual images from French and Spanish provincial collections, but there is no intellectual content or apparent plan for the volume other than a chronological one; the single-page chronologies of historical and cultural events for each century are too brief and baldly presented.
