Book Description
From Library Journal Despite a change in title, this is the new edition of The New American Roget's College Thesaurus in Dictionary Form, a standard reference work that first appeared in 1958. This modernized edition adds many new colloquial and slang
expressions for a total of 1500 new entries and includes phrases and quotations to cue meaning and usage. Collecting words and their synonyms, antonyms, and related words and arranging them by sense dates from the publication of Peter Mark Roget's
thesaurus in 1852. While most subsequent attempts to create such reference works have Roget's name in their titles, they have different provenances and arrangements. In this volume, Morehead a lexicographer and son of the previous edition's editor uses a
dictionary arrangement, placing both categories and individual words into one alphabet. This makes the initial lookup quick, but one must rely totally on cross references within the entries if the first search fails. A more felicitous system is found in
Roget's International Thesaurus (HarperCollins, 2001. 6th ed.), which arranges the entries by subject classification (based on Roget's categories) and provides a wonderfully comprehensive alphabetical index, thereby offering quick alpha access while
allowing for systematic browsing. Nevertheless, the Penguin Roget's is a carefully constructed, comprehensive, up-to-date reference with well-designed entries and copious cross references. It will prove useful in all kinds and sizes of libraries as well
as for individuals. Paul D'Alessandro, Portland P.L., ME Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
