From Booklist
The first edition of this work was well received when it was published in 1981. Its purpose is to help writers of history identify where they might publish their work among nearly 700 periodicals. The authors are, respectively, chair of
the history department, California State University at Chico, and reference librarian, University of Southern Mississippi.
Approximately twice as many journals are listed in this edition, more information is given for each, and coverage has been
extended to British publications in addition to Canadian and U.S. titles. Less-scholarly periodicals, such as those in genealogy and local history, continue to be represented.
A 10-page essay provides helpful information on what editors look for,
how to increase the likelihood of acceptance, what to consider in selecting a journal, and practical steps in preparing and submitting the manuscript. A list of books and articles provides further help. An advisory essay for book reviewers, also followed
by a bibliography, is similarly practical.
The directory of journals is arranged by title. The first item of information is the subject area(s) of the journal, followed by the affiliation (or headquarters) of the journal, editor's and book-review
editor's names and addresses, subscription information, circulation, description of readership, and where the periodical is indexed or abstracted. In addition, how manuscripts and book reviews are handled is described in detail--whether a query is
requested, time required for the journal to consider the manuscript, whether unsolicited reviews are accepted, etc. A subject index concludes the work and was found accurate, although no listing was noted for genealogy.
The list is very
wide-ranging, from the Social History of Alcohol Review to the Tar Heel Junior Historian. The work will prove useful for graduate students and historians.
