Description: From Library Journal
Adamson (English, Prince George's Community Coll.) has published several compilations of historical fiction for various audiences. This one provides an excellent updating of Daniel D. McGarry's World Historical Fiction (1973) while nicely complementing Adamson's recent American Historical Fiction (LJ 12/98). Here, Adamson lists and briefly describes some 6000 English language novels set outside the United States in a time other than our own. The book is arranged chronologically and subdivided geographically, with indexes by author, title, genre, place/time, and subject. Though all the books listed are suitable for adults, those of particular interest to young adults are indicated by a pointer. There is considerable overlap between Adamson's two works and Daniel Burt's What Historical Novel Do I Read Next? (LJ 10/15/97). Taken together, Adamson's volumes cover many more books than Burt's, but Burt's annotations are longer and offer evaluations as well as the descriptions Adamson provides. Libraries that can afford both Adamson and Burt should acquire both. Other libraries should choose Adamson for the quantity of listings and stick with Burt if their readers need evaluations.APeter A.
