Description: From Library Journal
Weber (special formats catalog librarian, Rutgers Univ.) has updated her 1993 Cataloging Nonbook Resources with this user-friendly manual for cataloging common nonprint formats. It covers formats "likely to be handled by the average cataloger in everyday situations" cartographic materials, sound recordings, motion pictures and videorecordings (including DVDs), electronic resources, kits, microforms, and Internet resources. Each format-specific chapter follows the same outline overview, list of record elements, chief and prescribed sources of information, choice of main entry, instructions for each record element (the sections covering 007 field values are especially helpful), access points, and sample records. The author repeats basic information to allow each chapter to stand alone, but too often the repetition is excessive, as though whole passages were copied and pasted regardless of relevance. While there is some overlap with The Audiovisual Cataloging Current (reviewed above), the most significant difference lies in the treatment of subject analysis, which Weber covers only generically and not specifically to AV formats. Nancy Olson's Cataloging of Audiovisual Materials and Other Special Materials (Minnesota Scholarly, 1998; 4th ed.) includes more detail and addresses a wider variety of material. However, Weber is more current, and her focus on common formats makes this more user-friendly for the average cataloger. Janet A. Crum, Oregon Health and Sciences Univ. Lib., Portland
