Statistics need not be a dull subject, as this readable addition to Neal-Schuman's popular "How-To-Do-It" series proves. Smith, library systems administrator at the Texas State Library, is responsible for collecting and publishing public library statistics from his state. Using realistic examples of library situations, he discusses why we keep statistics; how to collect them; and how they can be used to allocate resources more effectively, to demonstrate need, and as a public relations tool. Appendixes provide sample forms for collecting basic public library figures as well as standardized definitions used by the Federal State Cooperative System for Public Library Data (FSCS). The author addresses the appropriate use of graphs and charts for presentation and explains such frequently used terms as median, full-time equivalent (FTE), and benchmarking. This helpful primer should be required reading for first-time directors of small and medium-sized public libraries, who may want to follow it with the forthcoming Tell It!
