Carlson gives detailed instructions on how to construct several types of easy-to-make flannelboards as well as a variety of methods of producing the story pieces and storing them. Elemental concept stories about eating, getting dressed, animals, and pretending as well as traditional chants and rhymes such as "Five Little Ducks," "Jack Be Nimble," "Pat-a-Cake," and "This Little Pig" are presented with simple patterns in bold, black outline. Liz Wilmes's Felt Board Fingerplay (Building Blocks, 1997) does not include information about how to use flannelboards; Diane Briggs's Flannel Board Fun (Scarecrow, 1992) and Doris Hicks's Flannelboard Classic Tales (ALA, 1996) focus on material for older children. While this book is unique in its simplicity, many may prefer to use their imaginations or a simple coloring book to the same effect.
