Description:
From Library Journal
Effective subject cataloging depends on the cataloger's understanding of subject heading structure and the ability to match headings with the work in question. The Library of Congress Subject Headings, as Ganendran points out, is
the scheme most commonly used in libraries, and a familiarity with its basics is helpful before establishing subject cataloging practices. Unfortunately, this workbook does not completely cover the skills necessary for a professional, nonprofessional, or
library and information science student to learn subject cataloging by themselves as it claims to do. The text presented prior to many of the subject questions is too brief and incomplete, thereby not providing a solid foundation or the information
needed to answer the questions. However, the references made to the relevant sections of the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, such as assigning headings (H 180), the inclusion of free-floating subdivisions (H 1095), and a glossary are all
very helpful. It is recommended that this workbook be used as text alongside chapters 8-10 of Lois Mae Chan's Library of Congress Subject Headings: Principles and Application (Libraries Unlimited, 1995. 3d ed.). Ganendran is a course coordinater in the
library studies program of Canberra Institute of Technology in Australia.ASusan Ketcham, Long Island Univ.
