Description: From Booklist
Author Freeman supplements Books Kids Will Sit Still For (Bowker, 1990) with this new list of more than 1,400 recent titles suitable for K^-6 read-aloud sessions. Teachers, parents, and librarians will find the three introductory sections a great help. "Looking for Read-Alouds" tells, among other things, 50 ways to recognize a read-aloud and books that bomb. "Reading with Expression" gives hints on planning, reader's theater, and fiction versus nonfiction through scenarios with specific titles and classroom experiences. The school library/media center segment emphasizes the importance of library and information skills, with suggested activities on book care, finding books, and using a catalog.

Title entries are organized into four major groups: fiction; folk and fairy tales, myths and legends; nonfiction and biography; and poetry, nonsense, and language-oriented nonfiction. Fiction, with 60 percent of all titles, is further subdivided by grade level. Each entry notes author, title, illustrator, publisher, date, ISBN, grade range, and subject headings. Readers will appreciate the inclusion of the number of chapters, tales, or fables; estimated number of sittings; and pagination for longer books. Annotations describe plot, characters, and illustrations and offer great suggestions ("Cyclops is not for the faint of heart" ; for Mirette on the High Wire: "Set a rope on your classroom floor" ) and lists of related titles. Freeman's tale of how she initially loathed Macauley's Black and White, then grew to appreciate it through the process of sharing it, is a good example of the many anecdotes scattered throughout the text that are both revealing and inspiring. A professional bibliography is followed by author, title, illustrator, and subject indexes. Academic libraries serving teacher educators as well as school and public libraries will find this a useful addition to the reference collection. --This text refers to the

Hardcover edition.
