Description: From Library Journal
This book is a logical complement to Scholtz's two previous books on video, Developing and Maintaining Video Collections in Libraries (Professional Reading, LJ 3/1/89) and Video Policies and Procedures for Libraries (Professional Reading, LJ 10/1/91). In the latter title, Scholtz dealt with public service questions as they relate to video collections; in this new work, he examines questions that impinge on technical services as they are concerned with video recordings. Scholtz begins with a chronology of the development of the video industry, from Sony's introduction of the 3/4" U-matic format in 1970 to PBS Video's choice of Turner Home Entertainment as marketer of its consumer products in April 1994. He then discusses the various trends affecting video distribution and the nature and function of the various types of vendors. The final three chapters of the book deal with acquisitions and cataloging processes, taking particular note of copyright issues (i.e., does the purchase price include performance rights, and if so, what kind and for how long?) and problems that arise in cataloging videocassettes. In addition to the book's brief selective bibliography, there are bibliographic notes at the end of each chapter. For libraries that are initiating video collections, or are considering doing so, this handbook should be of great value, particularly if used in conjunction with Scholtz's two earlier books.?Terry C.
