From Library Journal
Two complementary and nominally priced books for the would-be stamp collector. Both volumes devote considerable text to stamp classification, identification, and condition, with the judgments and interpretations of each author
providing a sound base for reader synthesis. Krause, Los Angeles Times stamps' columnist, stresses specialty collecting, investing, the buying and selling of material, and insurance. A small glossary supplements the narrative. Grossman, former president
of the American Stamp Dealer's Association, has written essentially an elaborate glossary augumented from time to time with related factual data. Inasmuch as the range of terms is very wide, the book will make any other philatelic how-to volume--such as
Richard M. Cabeen's Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting (1979. 3d ed.; Harper, 1986. rev. ed. pap.) and Prescott H. Thorp's Complete Guide to Stamp Collecting (1953; Minkus, 1982. reprint.)--more useful to patrons. Public libraries should consider
expanding or updating their collections with either Krause or Grossman as succinct titles, or as complements to earlier purchases. Taken together, the pair will provide a well-rounded summary of the pastime.
