Including some 5000 American quotations divided into 500 topics ranging from Abolition to Youth, this volume has a chronological subarrangement meant to help readers trace changing attitudes. For example, the Vietnam War entries
begin with Eisenhower's "falling domino principle" and end with the last American ambassador saying that the "national will had collapsed." Unfortunately, this scheme does not always work. Many of the topics are not ones that change significantly (e.g.,
Experience), while others, such as Experts, have only one entry. The editors (who worked together on The New International Dictionary of Quotations, NAL Dutton, 1994. 2d ed.) claim that their "extensive annotations" distinguish this collection from
others, but most entries do not have such annotations. The author and key word indexes, which were not seen, will be indispensable. Despite its drawbacks, this is a well-selected and up-to-date compilation appropriate for most libraries.?Peter A.
