Book Description
From Library Journal Don't let the cover fool you. This book first appeared in 1965 as The Encyclopedia of Religious Quotations (Fleming H. Revell). Mead, a Methodist minister and longtime editor of The Christian Herald, compiled this hefty collection
of quotations and arranged them under nearly 200 subject headings. Each quotation is attributed to an author, and sometimes the printed source is also given. One of the indexes extends subject access by tracing the same 200 subject headings in the text
as keywords, and the other index lists the authors of the quotations alphabetically with their vital dates. The majority of the quotations uphold conventional Christian wisdom, but the book presents a few alternative viewpoints, such as those of Robert
G. Ingersoll and Friedrich Nietzsche. Interestingly, Nietzsche's often quoted "God is dead," which caused such a stir in the Sixties, is not included. The price may be tempting, but this reprint, with its small print and thin paper, has little to offer
even as a replacement copy for any well-worn 1965 editions still lingering on the shelves. Librarians looking for a source of more contemporary and multicultural religious quotations should consider The Quotable Spirit (Castle, 2000), originally
published in 1996.AVivian Reed, California State Univ., Long Beach Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.
