Pilgrim Lutheran School Questions Regarding Handy Library Manager.

Pilgrim Lutheran School is considering the purchase of Handy Library Manager Our school teacher/librarian is testing the trial version of the program and compiled a list of questions about your product. I also have a couple of technical questions that need answering prior to purchasing a laptop for the product.
1. Does the program generate barcodes for library cards?
2. How does the auto backup work and where is the data backed up?
3. Will we need to scan every book bar code or will the information transfer automatically to the new program and populate additional information that is not in our database?
4. Does the program generate barcode labels for new books?
5. Can books be searched for by series, by title and by author
6. Can the program generate a list of books that are currently out and also how long overdue?
7. Can the program tell us how many copies of a book we have?
8. How much hard drive space does your database and application require to store 8000 records, with a possible factor for growth?
9. How much memory (RAM) is needed to run the program, search against the database, for a library of that size?

1. Both library and borrower tables create unique barcode numbers that can be used on the item barcode label or borrower card.
2. Auto backup procedure is executed automatically after you exit the program. This procedure is excellent for libraries that operate on weekly bases. If you open and exit the program several times during the day, every day, the backup procedure will create many backup files. Backup files are created automatically in the following folder "C:/handy_lib/backup", you can change the backup destination in Options.
3. You (we) can import your data into Handy Library. For new items you can scan book's ISBN barcode (or enter ISBN manually) and use our program's auto-cataloging feature. To add one item directly into the MAIN LIBRARY CATALOG you can use add/edit form in the main library catalog.
4. The barcode number is generated automatically, you can print barcode labels from Handy Library, many barcode label templates are predefined. We compiled the list of library labels that you can purchase at amazon (good prices).
5. You can search by any field. There is a simple and advanced search in the software. There is a separate search module for borrowers.
6. You can display automatically outstanding items (all loaned out but not overdue), only overdue items, all loaned out, or you can define other search parameters (date, patron, ...). (Manage Library Loans)
7. There is a feature that displays: a) number of copies by title, b) number of copies by isbn, and there is the Custom View feature that allows to define SQL queries .
8. You need about 100MB for the application, data, and backup files. 8000 records will take about 10MB; Application needs about 50MB; Backup files, you can keep 2-3 files on the same computer, it's recommended to store the backup file on the library secondary media, just in case if something happens to the application's computer or hard drive.
9. Our system does not have large requirements for RAM, it depends more on version of Windows you are going to use. On Windows 7 computers program runs without any problem with only 4 GB of RAM, then on Window 10 it needs more, at least 8GB.
