The Dewey Decimal Classification System is a method for categorizing books in libraries. It consists of ten major classes, each divided into ten divisions, which are further divided into ten sections. Each classification is represented by a number or a combination of numbers separated by a dot. This numerical classification can be easily printed on the spine label of books, allowing them to be organized and shelved in numerical order.
Many libraries implement the Dewey system due to its popularity. However, this does not mean it is the only option. Smaller libraries may choose to use unique, simplified systems.
You can review the Dewey Classification System and create your own. To do this, consider building your classifications, categories, or subject values based on existing lists. For example, you can open and edit any list using a text editor program, such as Windows Notepad. Once finalized, you can import your lists into library data fields, such as CATEGORY, SUBJECT, DEWEY, or another field of your choice.
In your library's CALL number, you can use the Dewey number along with the first three letters of the author's last name. This allows for easy shelving of books based on the CALL value. Our program provides many predefined spine labels that utilize the CALL data field for your convenience.

Question: Does this system use Dewey decimal cataloging system?
Answer: The Dewey Decimal System (DDC) is a method for organizing books and other materials by subject using numerical classification. We do not have the Dewey values for the books that the librarian plans to add. The Handy Library Manager includes a data field labeled "DEWEY". The librarian can either enter the value manually or generate it automatically if the book's information is sourced from a web search engine. For example, the Handy Library Manager can import data from the Library of Congress, which provides DDC values for its materials.
Question: I want to catalog a book using DDC? Can I have a diagram on how to go about it?
Answer: We do not provide DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification) data. When entering books manually, you can use the web search feature to find the DDC for the book you are entering. Alternatively, you can use our auto-cataloging option by ISBN and select the Library of Congress search. The web search will display results from the Library of Congress, which include the DDC values. You can review these results and automatically transfer the DDC information to your library catalog using the Handy Library Manager.
